Being a part of the Valley High School
cheerleading squad goes beyond poms
and a uniform. It takes dedication,
leadership, and a family mentality.
“You have to set a good example for
everybody else looking at you, like the
younger kids, even the older kids as well,”
Sophomore, Jamerica Cox said.
The success of the Viking cheer team and
its members are not only a result of their
hard work, but the high expectations of
their coach.
“I’ve been very lucky where I haven’t
had one [squad member] that’s been a
problem or that I’ve had to pull off a team
because of things,” Jamie Vincent, Valley
High School head cheer coach, said.
“I’ve tried to really drill it into their heads
before they even tryout, what they’re
expected to be.”
People often look at
cheerleaders and assume
that their craft is not a sport.
Like other squads, the Viking
cheerleaders think otherwise.
“We spend as much time
practicing as football players,
basketball players and other
sports,” Sophomore, Jamerica
Cox said. “We’re very
competitive just as they are.”
The Viking cheerleaders
challenge anyone who claims
cheerleading isn’t a sport to
join them.
“I would ask them to come to
one of our practices and see if
they would make it,” Freshman,
Brooklyn Wise said.
Despite the countless hours
spent at practice memorizing
new routines, the Viking cheer
squad enjoys seeing their hard
work become a winning reality.
“When we win a competition
it’s like getting an ‘A’ on a test,”
Senior, Dashawn Adams said.
“Or getting accepted to the
college of your dreams…
first place.”
The bond that the Valley High
School cheerleading squad has
goes beyond practice and
the sidelines.
“We’re not just here to compete
or just to cheer together,” Junior,
Alexus Watkins said. “Outside
of school we’re still a family.”
